Untitled from The New York Collection for Stockholm
Keith Sonnier
American, 1941–2020
1973
A 1973 screenprint with varnish additions in which Keith Sonnier layers photomechanical symbols—a cracked numeral 8, star shapes, a blot and a handwritten scrawl—to suggest worn signage and accidental traces of urban life.
A deep black field is punctured by stark, cracked whites—the fissured '8' at the top, two cut-out stars and a cloudlike stain—while thin, purple scrawls hover like graffiti, giving the image a blunt, weathered immediacy.
Part of a collaborative portfolio, the print shows Sonnier translating his interest in industrial processes and ephemeral materials into printmaking, blurring Minimalist form, Pop imagery, and process-based art in the early 1970s.
