Untitled ( Based on Movement in Squares )
Bridget Riley
British, born 1931
1962
A 1962 screenprint in which Bridget Riley arranges a checkerboard of black-and-white squares with a compressed central band to produce a shimmering illusion of movement.
At first glance it reads as a strict grid, but a narrow column of tightly spaced vertical bars at the center seems to pinch, vibrate, and make the surrounding squares appear to undulate, creating a flickering, unstable surface.
A landmark of 1960s Op Art, it uses precise geometry and high-contrast repetition to make perception itself the subject, showing how simple patterns can provoke active, physiological visual experience.
