Untitled from E. G., A.....
Jesse Reichek
American, 1916–2005
1966
A 1966 lithograph in which Jesse Reichek reduces forms to broad, biomorphic black and cream shapes to explore the tension between positive and negative space.
At first glance two vertical, wavy bands cleave the sheet, their smooth, lava-like edges creating a steady rhythm as dark masses push and retreat against the pale ground.
Made amid postwar American abstraction, the print shows how lithography could translate painterly, organic rhythms into spare, hard-edged compositions that sharpened relationships of shape and edge.
