Poster for the magazine TENRI
Kazumasa Nagai
Japanese, born 1929
1981
A silkscreen poster by Kazumasa Nagai that uses crisp geometric shapes and saturated color to stage a futuristic, cosmic tableau for the magazine TENRI.
At first glance a deep navy field snaps the eye along a diagonal train of pale crescents and radiating golden lines toward a constellation of colorful, zigzagging cones and pyramids, creating a feeling of pulsing motion and engineered light.
Marrying traditional silkscreen craft with optical geometry, this work exemplifies postwar Japanese graphic design’s move toward bold abstraction and helped redefine the poster as a modernist art object on the international stage.
