Underwater Vision
Odilon Redon
French, 1840–1916
c. 1910
An oil-on-canvas dreamlike seascape in which Odilon Redon conjures the mysterious life beneath the waves through floating, almost organic shapes.
You'd first notice soft, pearly washes and a misty, near-abstract atmosphere punctuated by jewel-like, biomorphic motifs and a sudden coral-red surge at the right that reads like a submerged apparition.
A late Symbolist work, it shows Redon's shift from description to evocative suggestion, helping to open visual pathways toward Surrealism and modern explorations of the unconscious.
