André Lanskoy
French, born Russia. 1902–1976
1958
An oil-on-canvas abstraction in which André Lanskoy uses thick, energetic strokes and palette-knife gestures to make color and motion the subject rather than a recognizable scene.
A turbulent constellation of impastoed arcs, slashes, and jewel-toned fragments spins and collides against a near-black ground, the textured marks catching light like broken shards of color.
Made in 1958, the work is a strong example of European tachisme/lyrical abstraction, where tactile paint, spontaneous gesture, and color itself became the primary means of expression in the postwar shift away from representation.
