Der Querschnitt: England und die Engländer
Georg Trump
German, 1896–1985
c. 1931
A letterpress cover by Georg Trump for Der Querschnitt (c.1931) that pairs bold condensed headline typography with large geometric color fields to present the issue "England und die Engländer" as a deliberate modern visual statement.
You first register the heavy black masthead split by a pale vertical band, then the diagonally sliced orange and slate-blue triangles cutting across a warm yellow ground that force the eye along neat typographic columns.
A clear example of Weimar-era typographic modernism, it helped popularize the language of asymmetry, color planes, and strict hierarchy in magazine design that influenced commercial and editorial printing throughout the twentieth century.
