Cavalry Facing Right, Ropsha
August 19, 1907
A panoramic photograph on gelatin silver printing-out paper that records a line of cavalrymen on horseback, made to document and convey the presence and organization of troops in the landscape.
The view is dominated by a wide horizontal sweep: riders and horses punctuate an open field beneath a vast sky, their forms receding into the distance and giving the scene a quiet, taut sense of readiness.
As an early 20th-century military photograph it bridges documentary and pictorial practices, using panoramic composition and silver printing to preserve the material reality of mounted units just before modern warfare transformed them.
