Generator Project, White Oak, Florida, Full-Scale On-Site Mock-up (with Figure)
Cedric Price
British, 1934–2003
1978-80
This color photograph documents Cedric Price’s full-scale on-site mock-up for the Generator Project, a timber-frame testing ground where the architect explored flexible, adaptable spatial arrangements and everyday uses.
A skeletal grid of pale wooden frames slices the grassy site into repeating rectangles, leading your eye to a small seated figure at the far end and giving the scene the uncanny intimacy of both a stage set and a construction site.
As a record of Price’s method, it makes visible architecture as provisional, user-driven infrastructure and helped advance modular, adaptable approaches that influenced later experimental and participatory architecture.
