Felix Gonzalez-Torres
American, born Cuba. 1957–1996
1987
A small rectangular glass bottle containing folded newsprint—using glass and newsprint, the artist turns an everyday receptacle into a spare, intimate elegy that hints at absence and memory.
The flattened, pale‑green bottle quietly magnifies the browned, densely folded paper inside so that the printed marks and subtle distortions in the glass read like a faint presence or shadow trapped within a domestic object.
Typical of Gonzalez‑Torres’s practice, it converts ordinary, reproducible materials into a personal and political memorial, helping push conceptual art toward intimate, socially charged gestures about loss and remembrance.
