The Propitious Garden of Plane Image, Third Version
Brice Marden
American, 1938–2023
2000-06
A six-panel oil-on-linen painting in which Brice Marden lays a continuous, calligraphic ribbon of line across a 24-foot field of shifting color to evoke a meditative, garden-like journey.
Seen from afar the panels read as a horizontal spectrum—reds to purples—while up close looping, ribbon-like lines weave and overlap like pathways carved through color, alternately flattening and suggesting depth.
A late-career masterpiece that merges Minimalist restraint with Eastern calligraphic gesture, opening abstraction to immersive, multi-panel scale and a renewed focus on line, rhythm, and color as temporal experience.
