Expedition
Peter Stauss
German, born 1966
(2002)
A large watercolor and pencil composition that stages a surreal mountain ‘expedition’ where climbers, tents and oversized satellite dishes collide beneath shafts of light, exploring the uneasy meeting of exploration and technology.
Luminous, bleeding washes and delicate pencil lines make a dreamlike panorama—flashes of yellow suits and magenta tents, blue starburst beams, smoky gray clouds and tilted satellite dishes overlapping and drifting like memories or surveillance images.
By stretching watercolor to an almost cinematic scale and combining documentary motifs with dream logic, Stauss updates the tradition of expedition imagery to address early-21st-century anxieties about technology, communication and the environment.
