"Oprah Represents You"

"Oprah Represents You"

2007
A screenprint with ink additions that uses the bold invocation of the celebrity name “Oprah” and blunt text to challenge how media figures are presented as speaking for ordinary people.
A dense field of tiny blue rosettes sets off giant, black stenciled letters reading OPRAH REPRESENTS YOU, the stark contrast turning the phrase into an abrupt, almost confrontational proclamation.
Working in the language of advertising and mass print, the piece joins artists who appropriate popular media to critique celebrity authority and the ways visual culture persuades public identity.
