Structure Panoramas
Jan Dibbets
Dutch, born 1941
1973
A chromogenic photographic print in which Jan Dibbets systematically records a checkerboard-tiled floor as a sequence of near‑identical frames to investigate how slight shifts in viewpoint and light alter our perception of space.
You confront a grid of twelve close, almost identical photographs of worn black‑and‑white tiles, and slowly notice the tiny changes in angle, glare, and scuffing that make the flat pattern seem to tilt, breathe, and recede.
Part of 1970s conceptual photography, this serial study turns the camera into a measuring device—using repetition and subtle variation to challenge the single fixed viewpoint and to make the act of seeing legible.
