Bud Vase
Daum Frères, Nancy, France
French, established 1875
c. 1910
A small painted glass bud vase by Daum Frères that turns a single bloom into a sculptural study of layered color and textured surface.
A long, dark neck swells into a rounded base mottled with rusty orange and verdigris green, the matte, slightly crackled skin catching light like weathered metal and suggesting an autumnal landscape.
Dating from about 1910, this vase shows how Art Nouveau glassmakers used enameling and surface treatments to make glass read like nature and to push decorative craft toward the realm of modern art.
