Bud Vase
Daum Frères, Nancy, France
French, established 1875
c. 1910
A small painted-glass bud vase with a pear-shaped base and an improbably long neck, made by Daum Frères around 1910 to present a single bloom while exploring rich, painterly color on glass.
At first glance its tall, spindly silhouette and deep matte plum tone arrest the eye, and the subtly mottled, velvety surface reveals the hand of the maker as you move around it.
This vase illustrates how early-20th-century studio glass—especially Daum’s work—lifted everyday vessels into the realm of modern art by combining Art Nouveau form with innovative surface coloration and texture.
