Rue des Haudriettes, 2
Eugène Atget
French, 1857–1927
1901
An albumen silver print of a closed Parisian shop door that Atget made as part of his patient project to record the city's vanishing storefronts and street details.
The eye is caught by the dark glazed door set between iron bars and a carved pear motif above, while a faint, ghostlike reflection of the street appears in the glass, lending the scene quiet stillness.
This work is part of Atget’s pioneering photographic inventory of turn‑of‑the‑century Paris, which helped codify documentary photography as a way to preserve changing urban life and later influenced modernist and Surrealist artists.
