French, 1857–1927
1914
A 1914 albumen silver print by Eugène Atget that quietly documents a shaded garden path ending at a lattice gate, part of his patient project to record everyday corners of Paris.
You’re struck by the tunnel-like composition: dense ivy and tree trunks framing a sunlit dirt path that leads the eye to the crisscross wooden gate and a hazy rooftop beyond, rendered in soft, slightly sepia tones.
Atget’s unobtrusive, documentary images preserved vanishing urban and suburban details of Paris and helped establish photography as both historical record and poetic observation, influencing later documentary and modern artists.
