Residence of Administrator Whitney, Las Nubes
Eadweard J. Muybridge
American, born England. 1830–1904
1875
An 1875 albumen silver print by Eadweard Muybridge showing the three‑story wooden residence of Administrator Whitney at Las Nubes, made to document the built and industrial environment of a plantation site.
The eye is caught by the stilted, three‑tier verandas clinging to the hillside, with a water wheel and vats at ground level, scattered timber and small figures on the balconies that give the scene a tense mix of domestic order and industrial mess amid dense tropical foliage.
The image exemplifies early documentary photography in which Muybridge mapped colonial infrastructure and plantation life, helping to establish photography as a persuasive tool for recording modern industrial and social landscapes.
