Astral, Peinture Émail

Raymond Savignac
French, 1907–2002
1949
An offset-lithograph advertising poster by Raymond Savignac that promotes Astral enamel paint through a playful visual pun of two stylized figures painting each other.
Flat, bright primaries—a sunny yellow field with a blue and a red cartoonlike figure outlined in thick black—hit you first, and then the grin of the mirrored characters painting one another makes the joke immediate and charming.
A signature example of Savignac’s postwar graphic wit, it helped popularize a bold, minimal, and humorous visual language in commercial design that made advertising more human and instantly legible.
