Figure
Max Weber
American, born Russia. 1881–1961
1951-52
A small woodcut by Max Weber that reduces a seated human figure to flattened, stylized planes and soft color, using the print medium to balance representation and abstraction.
Its narrow vertical format centers an elongated, almost totemic sitter in worn orange, ochre, blue and black, with the carved edges and handmade paper lending a rubbed, intimate texture.
Made in the early 1950s, the print shows Weber translating Cubist and primitivist impulses into woodcut, helping to fold European avant‑garde ideas and vernacular carving techniques into mid‑century American printmaking.
