City: Eine Neue Schrift der H. Berthold A.G., Berlin, Probe 266
Georg Trump
German, 1896–1985
c. 1931
A letterpress-and-offset-printed brochure promoting Georg Trump’s new display typeface “City,” designed to present a bold, industrial sans-serif as the graphic voice of the modern metropolis.
A deep blue field is punctured by crisp white construction lines and a large arrow pointing into a circular map inset, where the heavy black word CITY dominates—the contrast of map texture, geometric lines, and stamped lettering feels like a city plan made into a logo.
An emblem of interwar modernist typography, it translates machine-age speed and urban planning into a condensed, industrial type aesthetic that influenced commercial and display type design in the decades that followed.
