Sketchbook: El Golea, II
Jean Dubuffet
French, 1901–1985
1948
An improvisatory ink drawing on reused printed paper in which Jean Dubuffet roughly renders a spindly, childlike animal figure to test a raw, anti-academic mode of mark-making.
Bold, looping black strokes and drips cut across the faded typed text so that a spiky-headed, long-legged creature seems to emerge from — and play with — the printed grid, its energy both crude and strangely animated.
Made in the postwar years, the sheet exemplifies Dubuffet’s embrace of Art Brut and found supports, challenging polished taste and helping open modern art to rougher, more immediate materials and gestures.
