The Sick Child I (Det syke barn I)
Edvard Munch
Norwegian, 1863–1944
1896
A lithograph by Edvard Munch showing a pale, sorrowful girl in profile, made to turn personal grief and the fragility of illness into an intense, psychological image.
The face emerges from a haze of restless, cross-hatched marks and smeared greys while sudden, raw strokes of red in her hair and the dark surrounding tones create an intimate, haunted stillness.
One of Munch’s recurring explorations of sickness and loss, this print helped translate subjective emotion into a modern visual language that anticipated Expressionism and reached a wider audience through printmaking.
