Dancing Figure
Max Weber
American, born Russia. 1881–1961
1919-20
A small vertical woodcut by Max Weber that presents a stylized nude dancer, using simplified, rhythmic shapes to capture movement and a decorative modern sensibility.
You first notice a narrow, dark-framed panel filled with flattened warm flesh tones, angular hands and a mask-like face, where body and motion are compressed into a mosaic of blocks and marks.
Dating from his American modernist phase, the print fuses Cubist abstraction, folk-derived carving, and expressive ornamentation, helping to expand early 20th‑century American printmaking toward bold, decorative abstraction.
