Bud Vase
Daum Frères, Nancy, France
French, established 1875
c. 1910
A blown, painted glass bud vase by Daum Frères that stretches a bulbous base into an improbably long, narrow neck, aiming to transform glass into a living, botanical stalk for a single flower.
Its matt olive-green surface, mottled with darker speckles, and the impossibly thin, tapering neck make it read more like a captured plant or drop of sap than an ordinary vessel.
Dating from about 1910, the vase shows Daum Frères’ Art Nouveau experiments in treating glass as a sculptural, nature-inspired medium, helping to raise decorative glass to the level of modern art.
